Two Letters From China

After I graduated from college in 1999, I moved to Asia. The first summer, I lived in a high rise in Hong Kong.

Every weekday, I clambered onto a crowded subway train that jetted me to an office where I worked as an administrative assistant. On the way home, I studied Mandarin.

While I was in Hong Kong, Daddy Will was diagnosed with cancer. We later learned that, as he battled the disease, Jesus sang to him again, calling Daddy Will to himself.

I sent my grandfather a birthday card with a long message. Woven into my words of love and concern, I shared the gospel.

Before school started that fall, I moved to mainland China to teach. Between the classroom, ministry, and spending time with my students outside of school, my days were full.

In the course of time, Willie fell ill, too. He had developed a hoof disease from eating too many oats.

Daddy Will arranged care for him at a racehorse hospital in Virginia. Aunt Darlene drove the pickup truck while Daddy Will tended to Willie in the trailer.

Even so, the best care couldn’t save Daddy Will’s beloved pet. Two days after he arrived at the hospital, the doctors put him down, and Daddy Will had him cremated.

Willie’s death seemed like a harbinger of my grandfather’s passing. I felt compelled to do more than share the gospel in a birthday card. I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t do everything I could to ensure his salvation.

Using a pen and several pages of loose-leaf paper, I poured out my heart to him. This time, I didn’t hold back. I told him believing in God isn’t enough. Even the demons believe and shudder. True faith means a personal relationship with the living Lord. Anything less would result in eternal separation from our Savior. For years, I told him, my greatest fear had been that he would die without being saved.
